The 2022 Dorothy Stringer Dance Show marked a triumphant return to the stage after a year away, bringing together the incredible talent and dedication of the students and staff. Held at the prestigious Brighton Dome on a single, spectacular Saturday performance, the show featured an array of stunning dances that highlighted the creativity and energy of everyone involved. Each performance was a testament to the hard work and passion of the dancers, making it a night to remember.
A Grand Return to the Stage
The 2022 Dorothy Stringer Dance Show opened with “One Night Only!”, an energetic and bold number performed by a selection of dancers, setting the tone for an evening filled with excitement and emotion. The theme of the show captured the sense of seizing the moment, with each performance delivering a unique story through movement.
Notable performances from the first half included:
• “La Casa de Papel” – This piece, inspired by the popular TV series Money Heist, was choreographed by Amelie Morris-Blake and performed by a talented group of students. With the theme of pulling off a heist, the dancers brought a sense of urgency and drama to the stage, making it one of the standout performances of the night.
• “Ebb and Flow” – A deeply expressive GCSE performance piece choreographed and performed by Iris Maclure and Claudie Mergler. This duet, with its fluid movements, explored themes of connection and change, resonating with the audience on an emotional level.
• “At the First Rainfall” – Inspired by the annual mass migration of the Christmas Island Red Crab, this performance, choreographed by Barney Sherratt, showcased a captivating interpretation of nature’s rhythms. The dancers embodied the movement of the crabs in a beautifully choreographed piece that was both visually and conceptually stunning.
Emotion and Power on Display
The second half of the show continued to showcase the immense talent of the students, with each piece offering something different, from dynamic and bold routines to reflective and poignant performances.
One of the most memorable performances of the second half was “Illusion”, choreographed by Ava Perring. Inspired by the intricate patterns of mosque interiors and ancient sites, this piece created a sense of optical illusion on stage, with the dancers moving in perfect harmony to reflect the complex designs of the choreography’s source material.
Other highlights included:
• “Taking on TikTok” – Performed by the Lower Commercial Club, this fun and energetic routine took inspiration from viral dance trends. The dancers’ enthusiasm was infectious, making it a crowd favorite.
• “Have Mercy” – The On Pointe Dance Company (Gifted & Talented) performed this powerful piece with grace and strength, showcasing their technical abilities and emotional depth.
The evening concluded with the traditional Leavers’ Bows, where the Year 11 students took their final bow on stage, performing to “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”. This was a moment of celebration and reflection for the leavers, as they marked the end of their time at Dorothy Stringer with one final, triumphant performance. The entire cast joined them on stage, bringing the night to a joyful close.
