The 2019 Dorothy Stringer Dance Show was an awe-inspiring celebration of student talent and creativity, featuring a stunning variety of performances that showcased the skills and dedication of the school’s dancers. Directed by Chloe Sampson and held at the renowned Brighton Dome across Friday and Saturday, this year’s show took the audience on a journey through powerful contemporary pieces, joyful jazz routines, and deeply emotional performances. The event coincided with Let’s Dance, making it an incredibly busy but thrilling week at the Dome.
With both events taking place, the atmosphere at the Dome was electric. Despite the long days and challenges of coordinating multiple shows, the energy and excitement from the dancers and audience carried the week, making both Let’s Dance and the Dorothy Stringer Dance Show unforgettable.
A Spectacular Variety of Performances
The 2019 show opened with a grand and exciting number, “This is the Greatest Show!”, setting the tone for an evening full of surprises and excitement. The first half featured standout performances such as:
• “Blue Pill, Red Pill” – Choreographed by Tassia Jones, this piece drew inspiration from The Matrix, exploring themes of choice and opposing forces.
• “Hijab” – A thought-provoking piece choreographed by Charlotte Hughes, exploring the symbolism and cultural significance of the hijab.
• “Organised Chaos” – A lively, high-energy piece choreographed by Marcus Faulkner, featuring a dynamic group of dancers that electrified the audience.
• “I Had Another Name” – This emotionally powerful performance, inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale, explored themes of oppression and identity, choreographed by Violet Aitchison.
Emotion and Power in Every Step
The second half of the show continued to deliver, featuring even more dynamic and emotional performances. The variety of styles, from vibrant to reflective, demonstrated the versatility of the students.
A particularly striking performance was “Snare”, choreographed by Flo Osborne-Jones, which used expressive movement to convey the feeling of being trapped. The dance was a visual and emotional exploration of entrapment and struggle.
Other highlights included:
• “Dancing Through Time” – A fun journey through the history of dance, engaging the audience with its vibrant energy and diverse styles.
• “Peculiarity” – Performed by the Gifted & Talented group, this piece featured bold and eccentric choreography that left a lasting impression.
The evening concluded with the traditional Leavers’ Bows, as the Year 11 students took their final bow on stage. This year’s bows were especially significant, marking the end of the leavers’ time in the show and celebrating their journey with one last performance to a packed audience. The entire cast joined them on stage, bringing the night to an emotional and joyful close.
